Apple iPhone 3G

Apple’s iPhone supremo Greg Joswiak told me that the camera software had been tweaked to produce better quality pictures, but the fact is that the imaging is the iPhone’s weakness: no flash, no video recording, no autofocus, no videocalling. On the plus side, the GPS-toting iPhone 3G will now geotag photos with the position they were taken. Apple will say they listen to market demands, but you and I will know this was their marketing and manufacturing strategy which allows the brand and product to get out there and catch people before the competitors can move. Unfortunately for Apple, their competitors are moving quicker and supplying arguably better products, albeit without the cache of the Apple brand. Apple has required that AT&T allow people to upgrade their existing iPhones, yes, but AT&T’s part of that concession is that when you upgrade the phone, you sign a two-year extension to your contract. Basically, Apple has required that every iPhone owner be considered upgrade-eligible, NOT that they be allowed to just purchase a new iPhone with their old service.

Apple claim to have fixed on other annoying feature on the original iPhone – battery life. The iPhone 3G has up to 10 hours talktime on GSM, with a maximum of 5 hours talktime on 3G. Apple?s MobileMe offers email, calendar, and contact synchronization plus photo and file sharing. Nobody knows what the right mix of web services is at this point, and there?s still time to figure it out.

Built-in GPS allows users to find their location, get directions, and see traffic. It also offers MobileMe, an Internet service that pushes email, contacts, and calendars to applications on the iPhone, iPod touch, Macs and PCs. Built in GPs – great, as long as I can get maps for the places I need to go to. MMS not there – pity as it will affect others who may wish to send stuff via MMS.

Apple have done a great job designing the software and hardware and it’s never a hassle to use – which for smartphones really is saying something. Things work without mucking around. Apple’s iPhone is a device that has changed mobile phones forever. Apple is one of the least respected stocks in the tech industry. Lots of pent-up potential that is never realized.

Apple also stepped up its push of the iPhone on developers with the announcement of the App Store. This will feature downloadable applications from Apple and other developers in a range of categories including games, business, education, entertainment, finance and social networking. Apple, Inc.’s new iPhone 3G will indeed cost $199 for the 8GB version and $299 for the 16GB version, but only for certain AT&T customers. Other AT&T buyers will pay more for Apple’s iPhone 3G—and buyers without an AT&T plan will pay a lot more for the iPhone 3G. Apple keeps 30% of profits on the App Store, which will be available in 62 countries. Enterprises will be able to create their own applications and sync these to the phone via iTunes.
